About the Sakharov Prize
Awarded for the first time in 1988 to Nelson Mandela and Anatoli Marchenko, the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought is the highest tribute paid to human rights work by the European Parliament. In 2018 the 31st edition of the prize went to the Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov.
Oleg Sentsov is a filmmaker and writer from Crimea. He directed the 2011 film Gamer, which premiered at the IFFR. After openly expressing his disagreement with the annexation of Crimea in 2014, he was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment in a Russian prison far up north. In May 2018 he began a hunger strike, to demand the release of 65 other Ukrainian political prisoners. After 145 days he was forced to end the hunger strike due to the threat of force-feeding. He remains locked up in Siberia until this day, from where he is working on a new film.
